What Is A Balance Disorder?
A balance disorder is a condition that affects your ability to stay steady and upright. This can manifest as dizziness, lightheadedness, or an overall feeling of being off-balance, which can make simple tasks like standing, walking, or even sitting more challenging. Balance disorders can be caused by various factors, including issues with the inner ear (the vestibular system), neurological conditions, or even side effects from medications. These conditions can significantly impact your quality of life by affecting your mobility and independence. Fortunately, UMG Physical Therapy in Columbia, MD offers skilled care for balance disorders, focusing on restoring stability and improving your confidence in movement.
How Is A Balance Disorder Treated?
Treating balance disorders involves addressing the root cause and customizing the treatment plan to each individual's unique needs. One of the most effective ways to manage balance disorder symptoms is through physical therapy. Physical therapy for balance issues can help improve your coordination, strength, and body awareness, allowing you to regain control over your movements. At UMG Physical Therapy, our specialists provide targeted treatments, including vestibular rehabilitation therapy (VRT), which is specifically designed to help with balance and dizziness. In addition to VRT, exercises for balance issues are incorporated into your routine to strengthen the muscles and systems that help keep you steady, ultimately reducing the risk of falls and improving your overall mobility.
What Are the Symptoms of A Balance Disorder?
Common symptoms of balance disorders include:
- Feeling off-balance while walking
- Frequent dizziness or episodes of vertigo
- Unsteady gait or difficulty standing still
- Lightheadedness or frequent fainting spells
- Difficulty focusing, blurry vision, or feeling disoriented
These symptoms may vary in intensity and frequency, but they can greatly disrupt daily activities and increase the risk of injury from falls. If you're experiencing any of these symptoms, it is important to seek a professional evaluation to begin balance disorder treatment as soon as possible.
UMG Physical Therapy Reviews
Excellent! - My mom arms has been in pain for some time. Kevin was able to diagnose the problem and help with a treatment plan. Kevin has great bedside manners and is great at what he does! Would really recommend!!
Forever Grateful for Dr. Ung - My mother suffered a brain hemorrhage and all feelings and control of her left side were gone. She underwent a successful craniotomy and we were told the road to recovery would be tough. It was disheartening as my mother needed full help to even shift in her bed, to be held while sitting so she wouldn’t topple over, and she needed two people to lift her to use the bedside commode. Literally, she couldn’t lift a finger (her left side) and due to neurological issues caused by the hemorrhage, this affected her right side as well.In less than two months of working with my mother, Dr. Ung and other PT & OT helped my mother to become semi-independent. She was able to use a walker, walking short distances safely, and to take care of her basic needs, like using the toilet with little assistance. Dr. Ung was patient and compassionate and explained everything as he went along. It was truly amazing to see him work with my mother and the transformation was like magic! Thank you so much, Dr. Ung!
Highly recommend - I’m so grateful for Dr. Ung for helping my mom with her chronic knee pain. Despite the language barrier, he found a way to communicate clearly and make sure my mom understood what to do. He was patient with her and really made her feel comfortable. My mom’s pain has improved and she’s moving around much better now!
Awesome and will come back! - Dr. Ung treated me for my lower back pain and sciatica multiple times! I left with with way less pain and was able to walk and play sports again. Thank You
