What Is Kinesiology Taping?
Kinesiology taping is a therapeutic technique that uses elastic tape to support and stabilize muscles and joints while allowing full movement. At UMG Physical Therapy in Columbia, MD, our team incorporates this technique into treatment plans to assist with various conditions. Whether it's reducing inflammation, easing pain, or improving athletic performance, kinesiology taping offers a noninvasive way to provide support during the healing process. Our experienced physical therapists apply the tape with precision, helping to promote recovery and provide the right level of support.
What Should I Expect with Kinesiology Taping?
At UMG Physical Therapy, your session with kinesiology taping begins with a detailed assessment to identify where additional support is needed. The tape is applied to gently lift the skin, creating space that promotes better circulation, reduces swelling, and encourages lymphatic drainage. This lift helps relieve pressure and provides support without limiting movement. The tape's elasticity mimics the natural movement of your skin, making it comfortable to wear for several days.
We also offer Leukotape®. Leukotape is a rigid, adhesive tape used in physical therapy for postural cueing and providing targeted support. Unlike the more elastic kinesiology tape, Leukotape offers firmer stabilization, making it especially effective for reinforcing proper posture and alignment during movement. Our therapists often use Leukotape to help retrain muscles by offering tactile feedback, encouraging the body to maintain correct positioning. This is particularly beneficial for patients dealing with poor posture or those recovering from injuries that affect their alignment. By applying Leukotape, we can support your body in making necessary adjustments, helping reduce strain and discomfort while promoting healthier movement patterns over time.
What Are the Benefits of Kinesiology Taping?
At UMG Physical Therapy, we've seen the advantages of kinesiology taping firsthand. Some of the benefits include:
- Pain reduction: The tape lifts the skin to reduce pressure, which helps decrease pain.
- Improved circulation: The space created under the skin boosts blood flow, promoting healing.
- Reduced swelling and inflammation: Encourages proper lymphatic drainage, helping reduce swelling.
- Enhanced mobility: Provides support without restricting range of motion, improving overall mobility.
- Muscle and joint support: Stabilizes muscles and joints while allowing you to remain active.
Am I A Candidate for Kinesiology Taping?
Kinesiology taping is suitable for a wide range of people, including athletes or anyone recovering from surgery or an injury. During a consultation at UMG Physical Therapy in Columbia, MD, our therapists begin with a detailed assessment to understand your unique needs and identify areas requiring support. They’ll evaluate your condition, range of motion, and areas of discomfort to determine the best approach. Once the assessment is complete, the kinesiology tape is applied. Our goal is to create a personalized plan that fits your recovery journey and helps you achieve better strength and mobility.
UMG Physical Therapy Reviews
Kevin was amazing! Alway flexible with scheduling. The facility was clean and welcoming. I will be back, if needed. Thank you for all you did to get me back on my feet.
I arrived with sciatica pain 4 weeks ago, and Dr. Ung immediately knew a plan that would properly diagnose and treat. The exercise plan was gradual but very effective with the added dry needling and heating. My sciatica pain and lower back has felt the best it had all year, and now I can roll in to 2026 with a healthy start.
Knowledgeable and friendly! Thank you for helping me get back to 100%!
Going to Umg PT was a great experience! They were very understanding, answered all my questions, alleviated my pain and taught me stretches to help prevent future discomfort.
Okay, so, a long time ago in August 2025, I woke up with excruciating neck pain. I was unable to turn my head and sleeping it off didn’t fix the issue. I went to UMG Urgent Care (also an amazing experience) and Stephanie told me that I would benefit from physical therapy to work through the neck pain. She recommended the physical therapy they had on site, and the rest is history.I cannot emphasize this enough; if there is an even an inkling that you might need physical therapy, please go to UMG Physical Therapy. Jeffery and Kevin are both so kind, funny, knowledgeable, and really help you work through and understand what’s causing the pain and how their exercises will help resolve the issue. Also, did you know that flat-footedness is fixable? No? Just me? Well, I learned that while I was here!I originally went in for neck pain, and then went to them for knee strength training so I was there for a good, long while. And let me tell you, I am not an early bird whatsoever. But the environment and staff are so amazing that I was always happy and ready to go to my morning sessions that I attended *before* work— that’s how great they are. And the routines they teach you really make a difference; if my neck or legs start acting up, I do the stretches and I’m good to go!Kevin and Jeffery are both super easy to talk to and they really pay attention to the patients on both the medical side and the personal side. They’d ask followup questions about my weekend outings or physical discomfort I had been experiencing the week prior. Considering that I was doing new stretches in front of essentially strangers every week, they make you feel right at home as you do it.TL;DR: if you e v e r need to go to Physical Therapy, no question, you have to go here. ⭐️ ⭐️ ⭐️ ⭐️ ⭐️

Frequently Asked Questions
Is kinesiology taping safe?
Kinesiology taping is considered a safe and non-invasive method of treatment. The tape used is typically made from materials that are gentle on the skin. As with any type of therapy, there may be some mild discomfort during application or removal of the tape, but overall, kinesiology taping has a low risk for adverse effects.
What is the difference between kinesiology tape and traditional athletic tape?
Traditional athletic tape is typically used to immobilize or compress an injured area. Kinesiology tape, on the other hand, is designed to provide support while still allowing for a full range of motion. It also has unique properties that stimulate natural healing and can alleviate pain.
Is kinesiology taping only for athletes?
No, kinesiology taping can benefit anyone with a musculoskeletal injury or pain. This includes athletes, but also individuals who have sustained an injury from everyday activities or those with chronic conditions such as arthritis. During a consultation at UMG Physical Therapy in Columbia, MD, we can discuss if kinesiology taping is a suitable option for your specific needs.
