What Is Tendonitis?
Tendonitis is a common inflammatory condition affecting the tendons, the tissues that connect muscles to bones. It can develop in various parts of the body, such as the wrist, shoulder, or elbow, and is often related to overuse or injury. This condition leads to pain, swelling, and tenderness in the affected area, significantly limiting your range of motion and daily activities. The most common causes of tendonitis include repetitive movements, improper techniques during physical activity, and sudden increases in exercise intensity. Addressing it early can help reduce inflammation and prevent worsening symptoms. Schedule an appointment with one of our physical therapists at UMG Physical Therapy in Columbia, MD to start receiving the care you need.
How Is Tendonitis Treated?
Treatment often includes a combination of methods to reduce inflammation, relieve pain, and restore range of motion. Typical treatment options may involve rest, anti-inflammatory medications, and physical therapy. A physical therapist at UMG Physical Therapy can guide you through exercises designed to strengthen the muscles and tendons around the affected area, improving mobility and overall function. For more severe cases, ultrasound therapy or corticosteroid injections might be recommended. Seeking early treatment is essential to prevent further damage and support healing.
What Are the Symptoms of Tendonitis?
The symptoms can vary, depending on the location of the injury but generally include pain, swelling, and tenderness in the affected area. Here are some common signs to look out for:
- Pain or tenderness, especially during movement

Great atmosphere with educated and professional staff members. They have helped me tremendously with an Achilles tendinitis concern. The Patient Portal is a great tool to use when doing at home exercises (timer included).
I came in for upper back pain that I had been dealing with for a couple of months. Jeffery and Kevin were amazing from day one—knowledgeable, professional, and genuinely caring. My therapist, Jeff, created a personalized treatment plan that focused on posture correction, strengthening, and mobility. Within just a few sessions, my pain was gone and I felt noticeably stronger. They also provided an excellent home exercise program that I can continue using on my own. I highly recommend this clinic—they truly rock!
This is one of the best physical therapy facility I’ve ever been in. Very professional and caring
On Tuesday, I woke up with a crick in my neck after sleeping wrong on it and through the day it got progressively worse - I had to keep my neck tilted to the right (ear to shoulder) because it was 10/10 pain tilting it to the left or holding it straight. Was thinking Wednesday it was going to get better but it actually got even worse. Just sitting in a car trying to stabilize my neck with turns and bumps in the road was causing sharp jabs of pain in my neck.Went to see Jeffery and Kevin on Thursday and they did a quick diagnosis and began massaging my neck, shoulders and back which provided immediate relief to the pain. Jeffery has miracle hands. They had me do some compound stretches involving multiple muscle groups and strengthening exercises to give me ways to strengthen my back, shoulders, and neck for preventive exercises. For each exercise and stretch, they explained what was being accomplished and why. That really helped me understand how I got into the neck pain and how to prevent it in the future.Lastly, the billing process/dealing with insurance was seamless with them and went without a hitch - that has always been a sore spot for me in dealing with medical stuff - not so with UMG!Jeffery and Kevin provided professional and personalized care that you won't get at the chain physical therapy spots trying to get you in-and-out. I highly recommend seeing them for any acute pain or longstanding issues! I've had back and shoulder issues in the past and have also started to see them to get those addressed so I don't tweak my back in the future!
