What Is Gait Analysis?
Gait analysis is a detailed assessment of how you walk or run, aimed at identifying movement patterns and any potential issues. It examines your body mechanics to detect problems in muscles, joints, or feet. At UMG Physical Therapy in Columbia, MD, this evaluation helps provide valuable insights into improving mobility and addressing underlying concerns. Whether you're a runner seeking to enhance performance or someone looking to move more comfortably, these assessments offer a valuable tool for understanding your movement patterns and making necessary adjustments for improved functionality.
How Does Gait Analysis Work?
During an evaluation, a physical therapist will closely observe and record your walking or running patterns. Special equipment may be used to capture the alignment of your feet, knees, hips, and other key areas. For those undergoing running gait analysis, the focus is on stride, posture, and how your feet interact with the ground. If you opt for a walking gait analysis, the evaluation can reveal foot alignment, imbalances, and other factors contributing to discomfort. A foot gait analysis zeroes in on how your foot mechanics affect your overall movement. This detailed data allows your therapist to create a customized treatment plan, helping you improve movement and avoid future issues.
What Should I Expect after A Gait Analysis?
After completing a gait analysis at UMG Physical Therapy in Columbia, MD, you'll receive a comprehensive report detailing your walking or running mechanics. This report highlights any identified issues, such as muscle imbalances or joint misalignments, and provides personalized recommendations for improvement. Your physical therapist may suggest specific exercises to enhance strength and flexibility, recommend orthotics for better support, or advise adjustments to your footwear. Implementing these tailored strategies can improve movement efficiency, reduce discomfort, and lower the risk of future injuries. Regular follow-up sessions may be scheduled to monitor your progress and make necessary adjustments to your treatment plan.
What Are the Benefits of Gait Analysis?
Evaluating your walking or running mechanics offers numerous advantages for both athletes and individuals dealing with discomfort. Here are some of the key benefits:
- Prevents injuries: Identifying movement problems early can help reduce the risk of common injuries, like shin splints, plantar fasciitis, and knee pain, particularly for runners.
- Boosts efficiency: Running gait analysis can improve your form, making each stride more effective and reducing unnecessary strain.
- Enhances mobility: Walking gait analysis can highlight imbalances, leading to improved balance and ease of movement over time.
- Reduces pain: Foot gait analysis can pinpoint the root cause of pain, enabling targeted treatments for discomfort in the feet, knees, hips, or back.
- Personalized treatment: The insights gained from these evaluations allow physical therapists to customize therapy programs based on your specific needs.
UMG Physical Therapy Reviews
Kevin was amazing! Alway flexible with scheduling. The facility was clean and welcoming. I will be back, if needed. Thank you for all you did to get me back on my feet.
I arrived with sciatica pain 4 weeks ago, and Dr. Ung immediately knew a plan that would properly diagnose and treat. The exercise plan was gradual but very effective with the added dry needling and heating. My sciatica pain and lower back has felt the best it had all year, and now I can roll in to 2026 with a healthy start.
Knowledgeable and friendly! Thank you for helping me get back to 100%!
Going to Umg PT was a great experience! They were very understanding, answered all my questions, alleviated my pain and taught me stretches to help prevent future discomfort.
Okay, so, a long time ago in August 2025, I woke up with excruciating neck pain. I was unable to turn my head and sleeping it off didn’t fix the issue. I went to UMG Urgent Care (also an amazing experience) and Stephanie told me that I would benefit from physical therapy to work through the neck pain. She recommended the physical therapy they had on site, and the rest is history.I cannot emphasize this enough; if there is an even an inkling that you might need physical therapy, please go to UMG Physical Therapy. Jeffery and Kevin are both so kind, funny, knowledgeable, and really help you work through and understand what’s causing the pain and how their exercises will help resolve the issue. Also, did you know that flat-footedness is fixable? No? Just me? Well, I learned that while I was here!I originally went in for neck pain, and then went to them for knee strength training so I was there for a good, long while. And let me tell you, I am not an early bird whatsoever. But the environment and staff are so amazing that I was always happy and ready to go to my morning sessions that I attended *before* work— that’s how great they are. And the routines they teach you really make a difference; if my neck or legs start acting up, I do the stretches and I’m good to go!Kevin and Jeffery are both super easy to talk to and they really pay attention to the patients on both the medical side and the personal side. They’d ask followup questions about my weekend outings or physical discomfort I had been experiencing the week prior. Considering that I was doing new stretches in front of essentially strangers every week, they make you feel right at home as you do it.TL;DR: if you e v e r need to go to Physical Therapy, no question, you have to go here. ⭐️ ⭐️ ⭐️ ⭐️ ⭐️
