Dry Needling: Enhancing Treatment Options Physical therapy is a field that constantly evolves to offer patients the best possible care. One innovative technique that has gained popularity in recent years is dry needling. Our team at UMG Physical Therapy is well-versed in this procedure and its benefits.

Dry needling involves the insertion of thin needles into trigger points in muscles to relieve pain and improve range of motion. This technique can target specific areas of tightness and discomfort, providing patients with targeted relief.

Here's an overview of the benefits of dry needling in physical therapy:

1. Pain Relief

Trigger Point Release: Dry needling targets myofascial trigger points, which are hypersensitive areas of muscle tissue that cause pain. By inserting needles into these points, dry needling can help release muscle tension and reduce pain.

Pain Modulation: The technique may also activate the body’s natural pain-relief mechanisms, stimulating the release of endorphins (the body’s natural painkillers) and other neurochemicals that help alleviate pain.

2. Improved Range of Motion

Muscle Relaxation: By releasing tight muscle fibers and improving blood flow to the affected area, dry needling can help restore flexibility and reduce stiffness.

Joint Mobility: As muscles relax, joint movement becomes easier, which may be particularly beneficial for individuals suffering from muscle tightness that limits joint mobility.

3. Reduction of Muscle Tension and Spasms

Immediate Relief: Dry needling is often used for its ability to quickly reduce muscle spasms or tension. This can provide immediate relief, especially in cases of acute muscle pain or tension from overuse, poor posture, or injury.

Prevention of Recurrence: By addressing the underlying muscle dysfunction, dry needling can help prevent muscle tightness from recurring.

4. Improved Blood Flow

Increased Circulation: The insertion of needles into the muscle tissue increases local blood flow to the area. Enhanced circulation helps reduce inflammation and accelerates the healing process of injured tissues.

Oxygen Delivery: Improved circulation aids in the delivery of oxygen and nutrients to damaged tissues, which is essential for repair and recovery.

5. Faster Recovery from Injuries

Tissue Healing: Dry needling may facilitate the healing of soft tissues (like muscles, tendons, and ligaments) by improving blood flow and stimulating cellular repair mechanisms.

Reduced Inflammation: In addition to reducing pain and improving circulation, dry needling can also help decrease inflammation, allowing tissues to heal more quickly.

6. Improved Postural Alignment

Correcting Imbalances: Many musculoskeletal problems are caused by muscle imbalances. Dry needling can help restore balance by addressing muscle dysfunctions, improving posture, and decreasing compensatory patterns that might lead to further injury.

7. Enhanced Recovery After Exercise

Muscle Recovery: For athletes or active individuals, dry needling can be beneficial for post-exercise recovery, reducing muscle soreness and accelerating recovery time.

Reduced DOMS: Delayed Onset Muscle Soreness (DOMS) can be alleviated with dry needling by targeting sore, tight muscles and releasing the trigger points that contribute to pain.

8. Effective for Chronic Pain Conditions

Chronic Pain Management: Dry needling is often used to treat chronic pain conditions like fibromyalgia, tension headaches, and chronic low back pain. It can help break the cycle of chronic pain by targeting muscle tightness and improving overall muscle function.

Long-Term Relief: For patients dealing with long-standing pain, dry needling can provide sustained relief and improve quality of life.

9. Non-invasive and Minimal Side Effects

Less Risk Than Surgery or Medication: Dry needling offers a non-invasive treatment option for those who wish to avoid medication or surgery. The risk of side effects is minimal when performed by a trained professional.

Safe and Effective: Although there may be some mild discomfort or bruising immediately after treatment, most patients tolerate dry needling well, and the benefits typically outweigh these temporary effects.

10. Customized Treatment

Individualized Approach: Physical therapists tailor dry needling treatments to each patient's unique needs, targeting specific areas of pain or muscle dysfunction. This makes it an adaptable and personalized option for pain management and rehabilitation.

Our team of skilled physical therapists at UMG Physical Therapy has undergone specialized training to perform dry needling safely and effectively. This treatment can be used in conjunction with other physical therapy modalities to enhance outcomes and speed up recovery.

Whether you are recovering from a sports injury or dealing with chronic pain, dry needling may be a valuable addition to your treatment plan. Consult with our experts at UMG Physical Therapy to see if this technique is right for you.

I arrived with sciatica pain 4 weeks ago, and Dr. Ung immediately knew a plan that would properly diagnose and treat. The exercise plan was gradual but very effective with the added dry needling and heating. My sciatica pain and lower back has felt the best it had all year, and now I can roll in to 2026 with a healthy start.

Going to Umg PT was a great experience! They were very understanding, answered all my questions, alleviated my pain and taught me stretches to help prevent future discomfort.

Okay, so, a long time ago in August 2025, I woke up with excruciating neck pain. I was unable to turn my head and sleeping it off didn’t fix the issue. I went to UMG Urgent Care (also an amazing experience) and Stephanie told me that I would benefit from physical therapy to work through the neck pain. She recommended the physical therapy they had on site, and the rest is history.I cannot emphasize this enough; if there is an even an inkling that you might need physical therapy, please go to UMG Physical Therapy. Jeffery and Kevin are both so kind, funny, knowledgeable, and really help you work through and understand what’s causing the pain and how their exercises will help resolve the issue. Also, did you know that flat-footedness is fixable? No? Just me? Well, I learned that while I was here!I originally went in for neck pain, and then went to them for knee strength training so I was there for a good, long while. And let me tell you, I am not an early bird whatsoever. But the environment and staff are so amazing that I was always happy and ready to go to my morning sessions that I attended *before* work— that’s how great they are. And the routines they teach you really make a difference; if my neck or legs start acting up, I do the stretches and I’m good to go!Kevin and Jeffery are both super easy to talk to and they really pay attention to the patients on both the medical side and the personal side. They’d ask followup questions about my weekend outings or physical discomfort I had been experiencing the week prior. Considering that I was doing new stretches in front of essentially strangers every week, they make you feel right at home as you do it.TL;DR: if you e v e r need to go to Physical Therapy, no question, you have to go here. ⭐️ ⭐️ ⭐️ ⭐️ ⭐️
